What Causes Chronic Pain In Navel Region With Normal Ultrasound?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Aug 2014
Question: 30 year old female, chronic pain about 4 inches to right of navel for about 3 years. Had MRI's, ultrasounds, colonoscopy. Have had three children. Pain started perhaps during 2nd pregnancy or in between 2nd and third. Had umbilical hernia surgery 2 years ago (thought this might be cause of pain) pain is unchanged. Tired a lot. Hurts to touch, bend or twist. Pain is more superficial than deep. If palpated, will be sore for hours later.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of chronic neuropathic pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and would like to ensure you that your symptoms are not suggestive of a serious illness. This is because all relevant investigations have been done and they are normal.

The nature of pain suggests that it is a chronic neuropathic pain. The underlying cause could be injury due to surgery or pregnancy-related.

Treatment would be with medications such as pregabalin, gabapentin or duloxetine capsules. You should discuss about these medicines with your treating doctor.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Thank you for your response. With your guidance I think I have narrowed it down to Abdominal Wall Pain. What kind of a doctor would treat for this? Neuorologist? Pain Specialist?

Brief Answer:
Either of them would be fine.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I think you can either consult a neurologist or a pain specialist. Either of them should be able to start you on appropriate medications for pain relief.

Best wishes,
