Question: Hi I did cocaine for the first time a week ago. Since then I have had chest pains on my left side and back. No fast heart rate or shortness of breath. It hurts slightly when I breath deeply. Very minor pain. I took 1.2 grams, and will definitely not be doing it again.

Brief Answer:
Possibly a pulled muscle.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Chest and back pains are known to occur after cocaine use. During the peak effect of cocaine, your muscles can go into spasm although you may not notice as you would be under the influence of the drug. The spasm may cause a pulled muscle which leaves you with pain for a few days. As the pain is in your chest, it would be natural to worry that it is your heart. However, this would be very unlikely.
The pain is most likely going to subside over the next few days. I suggest you take paracetamol and ibuprofen in the meantime. Keep well hydrated with plenty of water.
If the pain remains after this time then a visit to your doctor for an assessment would put your mind at rest.
I hope this reassures you.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
