What Causes Burning Sensation On Tongue With White Coating?

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Mar 2014
Question: hello : since december 06 2014 I got a burning sensation that began on the back of my tongue. It did proceed to get to my throat and eventually my stomach. Ever since my tongue has reminded white , burning at the tip or at the center at times. i had a gastroscopy done : all good and biopsies negative. I also had an MRI from lower torso to sinuses level and nothing. Had an allergy test done and no allergy found. All blood analysis and urine came back ok with the exception of the HPV1 that came back positive. However the doctor said that should not be the reason for my burning white burning tongue. i was prescribed " Valtrex " but i am not reactive to it. I was also prescribed " DEXILANT " for acid refluxes but it seems it is not helping at all. One thing i have noticed is that at night I can feel some small saliva bubbles pushing through my throat , sometimes it feels like i would like to burp without being able. For example today my tongue is feeling like I have eaten pepper and it is very whitish. Hope you can have a clue concerning the cause of my condition : the gastro specialist says it must be viral and the infectious diseases says it is probably of gastric origin.....!!!!! ?????

Brief Answer: Advised further tests for oral thrush.... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have read your medical history and understood your concerns. Apart the gastric issues, another cause could be related to oral thrush (candida infection). I suggest to culture the oral swab for candida to rule it out. If the test will result positive, you should start immediate oral therapy with anti-fungal according to the sensitivity testing. Apart taking dexilant for the acid reflux, I would suggest to: - take antiacids - eat often and small portions - avoid citrus or spicy foods - take good oral hygiene Hope it was of help! Dr.Klerida Feel free to ask me other questions you might have!

Thanks . Can Candida works its way down to the stomach ? I also have at some moments during the day some post nasal drip. It seems that once they reach my stomach it burns ( morning before any food / only water ). However not bitter taste in the mouth !!! Doctor Klerida would it be helpful if I were to make a detailed journal of my symptoms with times , type of food eaten .....

Good Evening Dr Klerida : Today I did get my blood and urine tests back ( see attached ). According to the immunologist in Miami I am perfectly healthy , but no one can explain why my tongue remains white with post nasal drips and irritated throat when I wake up .!!! I did mention the possibility for " candida " and they say this disease does not really exist since every one carries candida !!!! I did pressure and requested an analysis of my tongue. I was expecting a scrub and they ended up performing a biopsy !!!! should have the results shortly according to the new physician. What would be the best possible way to test for Candida ? I also attached another file with blood work dated 01/22/14 where they mentioned some type of virus. However the immunologist insists that it is not of concern.... Finally , apart from the persistent white tongue ( evenly white colored / no patches ) , the post nasal drips and a hoarse throat in the morning at wake up time , the burning sensations have mostly disappeared or have become very mild , I do not blow or feel spicy air in my mouth like I did during December / January. My daily diet is : morning : plain yogurt + cereals + water ( no more honey ) Mid morning : Plain toasted whole grains bread Lunch : chicken / organic rice / cooked broccoli / banana / water and diner : again toasted multigrain bread alone. I did suppress all sugars just in case and well as any sauces or heavy foods. That is a repetitive diet, every day the same at least to see if this helps in some way.... Now if you have thoughts I will be happy to hear from you !!! Sincerely, XXXX

Brief Answer: normal test reports Detailed Answer: Hi back XXXXXXX Thank you for following up. I have seen your test reports and am happy to find all of them normal. I'd suggest to wait until you get the results of biopsy you did in order to give the final conclusions. Usually, an oral swab culture for Candida is the standard to get tested. It is true that Candida is a normally inhabiting the GI tract (including mouth). However, in certain cases, when the balance of microorganisms is damaged, it can found candida overgrowth, that should be properly diagnosed and treated. I am happy to know that the diet you are following is healthy and plenty of fiber. However, you can alternate healthy foods on daily basis to avoid eating repetitively the same foods. I am happy to come to know that your symptoms are becoming milder with passing of time. The treatment you have started and healthy diet is also helping. Looking forward to have the biopsy results! Good morning Dr Klerida : After further readings I learned that if Pepsin were to be present into my saliva It would be a definite proof for some kind of reflux. Unfortunately , in the USA they do not seem to have an easy way to probe for pepsin. I found out about a saliva test ( peptest ) from RD biomed ltd in UK. I did purchase the kit , samples saliva have to be couriered back to them. They claim over 80% accuracy. I believe that a negative result on pepsin could eliminate reflux as a possible cause for my symptoms. By the way I asked my Gastro specialist for this test and is answer was : " there is no reason for pepsin testing " . I am wondering about American doctors ... !!!! Regards, XXXX
