Question: Hello, What would be the reason a retired woman of 69 yes old with lupus and fibromyalgia, been treated pretty well..would have bulging veins in her lower hands and arms? Very much bulging..looks kind of scary...would this be blood pressure, or stiffening of the veins with age and lupus..the meds are just pain , Tylenol 3. Metformin, ramipril, crestor, aspirin, oxazapem, vitamins.. Should I be concerned, it has been happening on a regular basis in the past few months. Thank you, Regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: Not due to any pathology. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. A noticeable and bulging veins in the lower hands and arms is enough to cause distress. If you are thin built and you have lesser subcutaneous fat these veins are likely to be prominent. A subcutaneous fat is a cushion layer that is normally present beneath our skin and covers up all these superficial structures to give a smooth looking skin. A thinner layer of subcutaneous fat is not able to conceal your superficial veins properly which can be seen from outside. This can also happen due to atherosclerotic changes in your blood vessels. Let me reassure you that it is just a normal variation and you need not be distressed. A painless visible vein is not a health problem. There is no major health concern with you. Do not worry. Thank you about the vein question..I also wanted to know what reason and should I be concerned with my very fast pulse, from 110-124 and higher...I. Have just noticed this while fretting over my bulging veins..it's been about 6 mos..since I started checking it with my hubby's bp machine and a treadmill.

Brief Answer: Not related to prominent veins. Detailed Answer: Hello. Thanks for writing again. The fast pulse that you have could be due to- 1.Electrolyte imbalance-Abnormal levels of potassium, magnesium and calcium can cause increased pulse rate. A simple blood test will rule out these. 2.Hyperthyroidism- Raised levels of thyroid hormone is a common cause. 3.Excessive intake of caffeine, tobacco and alcohol can cause this. Restrict their use as much as possible. 4. Arrhymthmias due to heart disease- these are irregular heart rhymths. Diagnosis is made with an ECG. 5. Avoid stress and anxiety. Practice yoga, deep breathing exercises and relaxation exercises. You need to rule out all these causes with the help of simple blood tests under the guidance of your physician. Hope my answer is helpful. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish you good health. Regards
