What Causes Bright Red Vaginal Bleeding After Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 May 2017
Question: I am a 60 yr old woman who had a Total Hysterectomy 27 years ago and today I noticed a bright red bloody discharge after going to the bathroom. At first I thought it was my hemorrhoids acting up, but then I realized I wasn't having any pain. Then later when I cleaned myself after going I saw it again and checked to find out where it was coming from and it is definitely coming from my vagina. Any thoughts as to what could possibly be going on? Thank you

It is not a large amount but enough that I am wearing a pad. Again it is bright red fresh blood

Brief Answer:
Can be due to dryness.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
A bright red bleeding after a hysterectomy can happen due to vaginal dryness- fragile walls of vagina can bleed with minimal trauma. This can also happen if you are taking aspirin for a long time. it is best to consult a gynecologist and get the area examined to find out the exact cause.

There's been no trauma. Haven't had sex in years! Lol. But I have been on ASA for 3 years since they put a Stent in my posterior mesenteric artery because I smoke. And I take Excedri e which contains ASA for occasional pain or headaches. I was thinking maybe fistula. But you don't think it's cancer or anything like that, correct? P.S. Yes I have a medical background ( in case you were wondering)

can you have bleeding from over excursion at my age?

Brief Answer:
Cancer less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The chances of cancer are there but are less. Bleeding due to ASA is a more common cause. Only a direct examination can help in detecting the cause. Bleeding due to excursion is less likely.
Hope my answer is helpful.
