What Causes Breathlessness While On L-arginine?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 May 2017
Question: Hi Dr, One of my gym partner advised me to take L arginine 5mg granules with water as pre workout supplement, today I consumed Argin granules and felt a little breathless while working out and after workout. So I wanted to know if L arginine is good for a normal person and what is the maximum dosage one should take.

I was informed that L arginine works well for people who exercise and do weight training as it gives extra pump while doing it and results in weight loss. Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Explained below,

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query in HealthcareMagic,

L arginine granules is an amino acid, which is usually derived from diet red meat, poultry, fish and milk products. It acts by converting itself into nitric oxide which helps in dilation of blood vessels, thereby ensuring proper blood supply to all the areas of the body. It also helps in stimulating growth hormones, insulin and certain other substances.

It has been known to improve athletic performance due to its above said properties. But one of its common side effects is to cause airway inflammation which may exacerbate the already existing asthmatic condition.

Personally I would not suggest you to continue with this medication. Although L- arginine is advised for many other conditions, but for its potent side effects, it would be worthwhile to avoid it.

There is no particular dosage as such, but is usually recommended to limit to one XXXXXXX per day for a week's duration.
