Posted on Sat, 27 Sep 2014
Question: Hi Doctor,
My 15 month old daughter is having strange boils on her legs and few on her hands. I have introduced nothing new in her food to anticipate any allergy. There is no itching or any other symptoms. She is perfectly normal otherwise. What could be the reasons and possible remedies?

Brief Answer:
FOLLOW THE ADVICE.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

According to your information and attached image, it is MOSTLY suggestive of bacterial infection of hair follicle (Staphylococcus).

Following treatment can be followed:

1) Clean the affected area with lukewarm water and anti-bacterial soap.

2) Apply warm compresses and soak the boil in warm water. This will decrease the pain and help to draw the pus to the surface.

3) Topical antibiotic ointment like MUPIROCIN should be applied twice daily until she recovers completely.

4) She must stay away from dust particle and allergen subs. Do not pop the boil with a needle. It could make the infection worse.

5) You must consult with your treating doctor for clinical examination if there is fever or other symptoms persist.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish her good health and well recovery.

Regards,
Dr S Patra

Brief Answer:
DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query.

Staphylococci may be present on her skin and produce infection in presence of reduced immunity, improper hygiene, seasonal changes etc.

Contact with chemical subs, allergen particle, creeping of insect or fly may cause above clinical picture. It takes time for 7-10 days to recover completely.

I suggest you to give her nutritious diet and maintain hygiene properly. No chemical products should be applied until she is recovered completely. Just follow previous advices to get effective result.

Hope, I have answered your query in details. Kindly, close the discussion.

Good luck and all the best.

Dr S Patra

ok and one last question - when you say nutritious diet, do you intend any specific items to be included? She takes a good portion of cereals, pulses, fruits, vegetables and milk. But since she doesn't have all teeth yet, there are limitations in what she can chew.

I missed to mention earlier that she takes partially boiled egg, 200-250 milk, juices like water melon, lemon. She has also been taking calcium and other vitamin supplements from an infant stage. I like your suggestions but am facing difficulty in giving her chicken stew as she still doesnt have enough teeth. Can you advise any recipes? She has 4 teeth on the top jaw and 2 on the lower one.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your information.

Above dietary food stuffs are quite enough to make her healthy and active. Some chicken stew recipe can be made with properly sliced chicken (small piece). You can search on Google for proper processing in home.

1) Chicken stew with olive and lemon 2) Chicken stew with sweet peppers

3) Singapore chicken stew 4) White chicken stew brew.

If she can't eat small chicken piece or stew, you should give her soup after preparation of any of the above. It will be worthwhile to some extent.

Hope, I have answered your query. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.
