What Causes Blood In Urine?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Jul 2014
Question: I'm a femela 43. A week ago today I had cramping and a little pelvic pain. I thought it may be pms symptoms. Google said it could be a uti. I went to a clinic and my urine sample came back with no infection. No uti. However, blood was found. Not visible though. I was given antibiotic 6 pill 2 times a day for 3 days. Today is my second day. Yesterday I noticed a small amount of blood when I peed I had a mirror and it look like it may be my period starting. This morning and through out the day when I peed there was blood but small. I got a bigger mirror and it shows it came from my urethra. I don't have back or stomach pain just a small pelvic pain on the left side on a scale 1-10 10 being the highest it's a 2. I have one more day for the antibiotic. I want to know if I should go to the ER. And what could this be? Also I have no pain while I urinate, no feeling of not emptying my bladder. And the bleeding started after I started taking the antibiotic at least 1 hr after I took it.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Blood in urine should not be ignored.
Is it possible that you hurt yourself down there ?
Also, when blood is mixed with urine, the urine analysis is not very reliable.
Please get a urine culture done.
Also, a scanning of the kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder.
I think you should go to the ER for a thorough pelvic exam and urinary tract exam.
Since you are not having any significant pain, possibility of a stone is less likely.
It could just be a urine infection, that is starting this way.
Another possibility is that at 43, due to hormonal changes, the mucosa ( lining ) of the urethra dries out, leading to easy damage and breakage, leading to spotting.
This is called atrophic urethritis.
This can also be diagnosed by an exam.
Please have the needful done.
All the best
