What Causes Blood In Urine When Suffering From Genital Herpes?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: I have genital herpes and recently had a urinalysis done for insurance purposes. The result came back showing blood in the urine and white cells and I was wondering if the two are related. This test was taken 17 days after a mild outbreak and I have not taken meds for the outbreaks but have relied on natural treatments which have worked very well. I had another urinalysis a few days ago which came back the same which would have been eight weeks since the outbreak which is completely gone. I am also experiencing some back pain but no other symptoms of kidney infection…no fever or burning, etc. Is all this connected ? And would the meds for herpes help at this point?

Brief Answer:
These are not related.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HealthcareMagic forum.
I am Dr Aslam here to help you.
To have clear idea,I need to see the urine report(how many RBCs/white cells/HPF ?).

Anyhow, genital herpes is unlikely to cause blood/white cells in urine.
If conditions like renal calculus are ruled out, some RBCs and white cells on urine microscopy are usually caused by a urinary tract infection(may not always be associated with fever/dysurea),and will be cleared by a course of antibiotics.

As the abnormality persists on repeated testing,we need further evaluation. In such cases in my clinic,I will go for a urine culture and sensitivity test.Depending on the result and response to antibiotics,we may need further investigations like renal function test,USG abdomen etc.
I advise you to consult a physician for initial evaluation and management.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have further questions,I will be happy to help.Thank you.

Thanks for getting back to me quickly…sorry for my slow response.

Last urinalysis showed occult blood 2+ and WBC 10-15 …everything else normal.

If this were a viral infection it would still be unlikely the herpes is causing the blood in the urine?

I have had a history of kidney stones but I am not aware of one now…

Thanks again for your time.

Brief Answer:
herpes as a cause is still unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear.
Your urine report shows white cells more than blood cells. This usually result from a calculus with secondary infection or sometimes a simple UTI itself.
Herpes infection can also rarely cause this.but such cases are usually secondary to systemic herpes infection (not genital),and will be associated with systemic features like fever, fatigue, hypotension etc and hematological derangements like leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia.

As I told earlier, we need further evaluation with a detailed physical examination and investigations like urine culture, renal function tests,USG etc to clinch the exact diagnosis.
Your doctor will guide you.
Hope now you got cleared. If you have no further questions, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
Thank you.
