What Causes Blood In Urine Post A Bladder Stone Removal Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: Hi - Last August I had surgery to remove very large bladder stones and then also the prostate "green light" procedure on my prostate. The combined surgery took almost 3 hours due to the size of the stones and my doctor was only able to complete part of the "green light" procedure. Everything was fine. Went home the same day, catheter out the next morning. Had blood for a while but then it cleared up. I went for months with no other symptoms and felt great. Over the past month however I have had a number of blood recurrences in my urine. No pain or other symptoms, just the blood. Very heavy at times but it always cleared up in a couple of days. Those episodes are seem to be getting more frequent. Two in the last two weeks. My first question is what is might be causing the blood? Will the prostate ever heal and this go away? My doctor has suggested the TURP procedure but I'm not convinced I want to do that. Is is likely that there may be something else causing the blood. Just looking for another opinion. Thanks so much.

Brief Answer:
Residual prostate gland or stone, is most likely cause for hematuria.

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxx and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can fully understand your concern.

Hematuria or blood in urine,is not normal.
There has to be some cause for it.
Your blood reports are all normal, with borderline elevated blood sugar.

The first and most likely cause is the prostate gland itself.
The reason being, your Urologist had admitted to not removing it completely.

There're many other causes for hematuria,like infection,stone,tumor,etc.
To know the reason for this hematuria, any way some tests will be needed like :

1. urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine,creatinine,PSA, RBS,LFT, platelets,and PT.
3. ultrasound -KUB,with residual urine and TRUS.
4. Uroflowmetry.

With these reports,a cause may be known for the bleeding.
If there's any doubt, you may need to undergo a cystoscopy test.

Treatment will depend,on reports of these tests.
Wish you well.

Thanks. Does the prostate ever heal and the blood go away? Are you a fan of TURP? Do you think a second "green light" procedure to clean this up would also be appropriate? Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
TURP is a gold standard operation for all Urologists.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

After prostate surgery, the prostate gland fossa, heals completely.
All bleeding will stop also.

TURP is a gold standard operation, against which all other operations are done.
Urologist's perform the operation, using the technique they're confident about.

If residual prostate gland is present,it is best removed.
It's a known cause for recurrent bleeding.

Wish you well.
