What Causes Blood In Urine After Using Apple Cider Vinegar To Clean Bladder?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: Someone tried to flush out his bladder with apple cider vinegar. He knew that women used vinegar for douches and he thought he could flush out his bladder and urinary tract with apple cider vinegar. I don't know how much he used but his last urine had blood in it. He has pain when he urinates and he is a smoker. What should he do? He does not have insurance.
Please address the issue of someone putting apple cider vinegar directly into his bladder. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
more information please

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

how did he try? Did he have a catheter in place? Did he flush the fluid with a syringe though the urethra?

I suppose it's the latter, so it's probably just an irritation of the urethra. A urinalysis would be helpful to check for the presence of bacteria. If bacteria are present then an antibiotic might help. Otherwise it should get better soon. Mild analgesics like paracetamol can be used.

The same applies for a patient with a catheter. Phenazopyridine is another analgesic that acts on the urinary tract. It's usually used for a couple of days only.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

He used a catheter and syringe to force apple cider vinegar into his bladder. He did this stupid thing on his own. What does the apple cider vinegar do to the bladder? Does it cause the lining to erode causing bleeding? Apple cider vinegar is very acidic. I am interested in knowing what damage Apple cider vinegar causes. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
urinary tract infection is possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

although the vinegar is supposed to have antiseptic effects, flushing non-sterile fluid into the bladder may cause cystitis. Or perhaps the fluid itself could be irritating to the bladder. I can only say that acetic acid has been tried in some small studies without any serious problems but also without any advantage regarding urinary tracti infections.

A urinalysis would help to distinguish simple irritation from infection. In case of infection an antibiotic (a cephalosporin for example) with phenazopyridine would help.

Kind Regards!
