What Causes Blood In Urine After A Cardioversion?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: My friend has blood in his urine. He had a mitro valve repair in XXXXXXX and has had numerous problems since. example: has had to have his lung drained twice...both times over 1 litre of liquid. He had a cardio inversion about 4 weeks ago. Since then I don't think he has water on his lung but now has blood in his urine.

Brief Answer:
possibly MAHA

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir.

I understand your query and concern.

Your friend seems to have MAHA-microangiopathic haemolytic anemia.

This is common after surgery on mitral valve.

This can manifest as bleeding into the urine due breakage of the red blood cells while passing through the repaired wall area.

This condition can be diagnosed through Complete blood picture examination which can demonstrate broken red blood cells.

Iron supplementation is usually stopped as it can lead to iron overload since the defect does not lie in the iron deficiency.

Corticosteroids are the main stay of treatment.

The condition usually resolves with time.

A CT abdomen is also simultaneously needed to rule out pelvic organ pathology including kidneys.

Thank you.
