What Causes Blood In The Semen?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jul 2015
Question: i have blood in my semen and have seen a uroligist and he examined my prostate and it was fine. Also did a ct scan where they looked for cancer also came negative. I was on finesteride for five years with 1mg per day as treatment for losing my hair but have now stopped taking it for the last year. The blood in the semen comes and goes for the last 12 months but i notice a fishy odour on my penis even afer having a shower.
Do you think i have a prostate infection?

Brief Answer:
May be due to congestion but not the infection of the prostate.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read and understood your concerns.

From the history and the reports you have mentioned this does not look to be a prostate infection as it would have been picked up by the Urologist on prostate examination and by the CT you have undergone.

His condition is called Hematospermia and in most of the cases the cause never could be found out in spite of all the available tests.

Since your PSA and other tests are normal, the botheration about the cancer should be forgotten, please stop worrying about it and anyways you history is for the last 12 months.

It seems that you stopped Finesteride abd the hematospermia stopped and this may be related.

The fishy smell is due to a subclinical balanitis and can be treated with local application of liquid povidone iodine, oral antibiotic and metronidazole and the same treatment to be taken by your partner if you are sexually active.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis, and get a proper further treatment. Please feel free to ask for more or if you need further clarifications or if you feel there is a gap of communication.
