What Causes Blood In Stools?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 May 2015
Question: Hi, I had knee surery 4 months ago and developed blood clots in my poplitiel and more distal veins. I have been on Xarelto for 3.5 months. In the beginning when the clotting was the worst I would experience Naseau, cold sweats (more like the chills as I didn't actually sweat), muscle aching over my entire body. I feel feverish but I just took my temp - 98.8. Also I have headaches too. This is happening to me right now and it feels worse than it ever did even at the beginning of the clotting - BUT the symptoms are all the same as before. One difference in my physiology is that in the last 4 days I am having bloody stools (but no diarhea or constipation), but only at the end of the movement and the blood is bright red (doesn't seem to be in the stools). I have tried to make appointments with all my doctors - Vasular Surgeon, Hematologist, and GP - but can't get in and I am worried and also embarrassed about the blood issue. I have heard comments in the beggining about phlebitis and something else but my symptoms don't completely match and the pain is not localized to the clotted areas - it is an all over body / muscle ach / pain. I really feel like this is blood clot / Xarelto related - as opposed to having the flu. Anyway I would sure like to hear from a proffesional MD with experience in this area.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Can be due to Xarelto.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The bloody stools that you are having can be due to Xarelto. It can cause a bleeding tendencies if the dose is more than required. Adjustment of the doses will help the bleeding to stop.
Nausea, cold sweats and muscle pains can be due to decreased fluid intake or electrolyte balance. You can increase your fluid intake and electrolyte rich fluids like fresh juicy fruits and Garotade and see if it helps.
You can also get a muscle relaxant prescribed in case the muscle pain is persistent.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you Dr Paveen Tayal.

I can increase my intake of fruits like Oranges and Gatorade and other electyrolytes. One question I have is that should I be concerned about the acidity of the foods I eat - would that contribute to the bleeding i.e. via ulsers? Being that the blood is not in my stool but just comes out after the movement - can I assume that the bleeding is happening in my lower bowels vs ulseration in my stomach?

By the way I have been increasing my activity level and 3 days ago I walked for 1.2 hours but I was drinking Gatorade along the way, but Yes I did feel a bit dehydrated so that theory sounds logical. Question would be - why did it take a day or two later before I started feeling all of these feverish symptoms?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Bleeding is not from ulcers.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The fresh bleeding after a bowel movement is from lower bowel. It is not related to ulcers. You can take acidic fruits without any problem.
The body tries to accommodate the increase in need of fluids and electrolytes immediately by finishing the stores. When your intake does not increase according to the requirement, you feel symptoms after 2-3 days. Taking hot shower will be soothing for you.
Hope my answer is helpful.
