What Causes Blood In Stool?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Aug 2017
Question: My best friend has been passing blood. Sometimes it is bright red and sometimes it is clots of blood. She is having very painful cramps. She's had diverticulitis in the past. She has sent her records of her last colonoscopy to a gastroenterologist and is waiting for an appointment. Is it likely that this is a flare up of diverticulitis or could it be signs of something worse.

Brief Answer:
Fare up of diverticulitis is the most probable cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query about your friend, albeit short and specific.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
Passing of the blood wither bright red or clots can be due to flare of diverticulitis.
The presence of blood in the colon can cause cramps.
Since she is a known case of diverticulitis, it is the most probable cause of bleeding.
Considering her age, it would be better to go for a review colonoscopy to see if there is any other cause and sometimes this can be therapeutic too.

I hope this answers your query.
