What Causes Blood In Stool?

Posted on Thu, 30 Mar 2017
Question: Hi Dr. Rynne. I am a 55 year old white femaie, 66 inches tall, 108 pounds, with occasional mild rectal bleeding. Due to financial stress, which is abating, I have had up to 8 bowel movements daily over the past 4 months. Within the past month I have been occasionalyl bleeding just a small amount during the bm's. While I am not having as many bm's (4 is more the norm for me now), I have bowel leakage several times each day and a sore tailbone, which seems like hemorrhoid's, but I wanted your opinion. I walk several hours each week and eat a mostly organic, plant based diet. I drink several glasses of water each day including ginger tea, lemon juice, turmeric, and ginger. Thank you for your advice.

Brief Answer:
Probably hemorrhoids but you need to be examined by a gastroenterologist!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks for contacting healthcare magic for advice.

I have reviewed your information fully and have the following comments to make:

1. Blood in stool always needs to be evaluated. We need to be sure of the exact cause and handle appropriately. At 55years, i expect you must have benefitted from a screening colonoscopy yet. If you haven’t, please kindly follow up with your primary care for this to be planned and done. This will also serve as the perfect way to evaluate for the blood in stool and the pain you do complain of.

2. With several bowel movements in a day, this is a perfect risk factor for stool leakage. If we fail to get the stools solid again, this might always occur. I will suggest you take loperamide to help reduce the frequency because am sure this diarrhea is not caused by an infection. With diarrhea, always drink much water to replace any fluid losses.

3. Could be hemorrhoids but would suggest that you follow up with 1 above for comprehensive evaluation.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me on this. Am always available to address your health concerns.

Thank you Dr. Ditah! I will make an appointment tomorrow with my primary care MD to get a referral to a gastroenterologist. Since my health has always been nearly perfect, this is probably not a big issue, but I will have a colonoscopy done and stool analysis as well. And I will email the results to you. Have a nice evening!
