Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy is necessary.

Detailed Answer:

Thank you for the query.

Blood in stool can be present due to few factors. If the blood is bright red and on the surface of the stool, hemorrhoids are the most probable reason.
If the blood is red and mixed with the stool, large intestine issue like polyp or cancer are the most probable reasons. If there is also diarrhea and mucus in the stool, bacterial infection is most probable.
If the blood is black like a tar and mixed with stool, bleeding from peptic ulcer is most probable.
As the risk of colon cancer significantly rises over the age of 50, this should be ruled out at first.
Please do not ignore your symptoms. Consult your doctor and have colonoscopy done at first.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
