What Causes Blood In Stool After Taking Antibiotic Medication?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: I had got my throat infected. My ENT prescribed me dosages of 5 days which includes twice a day anti-biotic, empty stomach 1 tab early morning and paracitamol SOS. MY THROAT IS NOW FINE after the course of medicine.

But on the other hand, after hard antibiotics, my stomach is feeling disturbed. I FOUND LITTLE BLOOD IN MY STOOL AND LITTLE PAIN IN MY ANUS/rectum portion YESTERDAY and i had only curd juice and fruit / salid in my diet since yesterday.

Along with this in these couple of days i feel like swings in my lower abdomen before passing stool.

What proper treatment should i go for at this stage.?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic associated diarrhoea (AAD).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The most likely cause for these symptoms is antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

2. The treatment is initially to stop the antibiotics. This condition is usually self limiting. Inform your doctor.

3. Your doctor may prescribe probiotics (such as Vibact or Enterogermina). Continued use of the earlier antibiotics in spite of these symptoms may lead to inflammatory colitis. This condition is more sever and requires further treatment.

4. If this does not subside soon after stopping the antibiotics, inform your local doctor.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Sir,

Thanks for your opinion. Wanted to tell more symptoms that
it's been 72 hours i have stopped taking anti-biotics.

1. Actually, I also had antibiotic 5 days course for my digestion problems 1 month ago. But at that time my family doctor ALSO prescribed Pro-biotics along with that for 4-5 days.

2. NOW, for my throat infection i had to go through 5 days course of anti-biotics but without any pro-biotics. while i was taking PAN-D early morning empty stomach with those Anti-Biotics.

3. HOWEVER, the same Probiotic which i had taken 1 months ago. I have
started taking 1 capsule of probiotic GUTEX named probiotic since 3-sep-2015.

4. Three days ago i found light coloured blood spot in my stool. AND NOW TODAY i fould dark coloured blood after 2 days again.

5. I have bought RootiCool gel to be applied in the rectum/anus on my own.
and have been using for last 3 days.

What serious precautions & diet i should take... please detail the same.

It is requested that Also prescribe some good / high quality Probiotics.

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Stool exam, Gastroenterologist opinion.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Get a stool examination done (including for occult blood).

2. Consult a gastroenterologist and get an examination done for hemorrhoids (piles).

3. As mentioned before, probiotics such as Vibact or Enterogermina should be fine.

4. You need a high fibre diet or fibre supplement/ stool softener.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
