What Causes Black Colored Bump On Tonsil And Swollen Lymph Nodes?

Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: It doesn't hurt and I don't feel sick. There is a round black ball on my tonsil that when touched has blood on the qtip but it doesn't move. Along with this I have swollen neck lymph nodes. I had a bout of unexplained weight loss last year that the doctors said was anxiety but that's the only other condition I have. Please help me figure out what this may be. I am going to doc next week but I need some piece of mind.

Brief Answer:
It is an infection!

Detailed Answer:
Hello

The tonsils have pits on their surface which are called a "crypts" , these are found naturally on the surface of the tonsils.

Sometimes these crypts may get blocked and filled with undigested food particles and lead to a swelling. this undigested material acts as a focus and causes bacteria to grow and cause an infection.

This is the case in your tonsil , the black spot is likely to be due infected food and swelling in one of your crypt and the bleeding is due to the infection.

This will also explain the swollen glands in your neck.

Please dont worry , meet your ent doctor , as will need antibiotics for controlling the infection and reducing the swelling in the crypt. Once the swelling comes down the food particles will come out themselves and the bleeding will stop

You should also start gargling with warm salt water 2-3 times a day , it will also help reduce the swelling and infection.

Take care!
