default
Posted on Wed, 13 Sep 2017
Question: extreme belching for about 2 weeks now along with muscle pain left side below the belt. I think I pulled a muscle there. also have anemia and was told by a Nurse Practitioner to start taking Iron supplements 2x daily which I started 2 weeks ago so I'm thinking I should only take 1 iron tablet daily instead of 2? Any thoughts doctor? XXXXXXX R.

Brief Answer:
Side effects of iron supplements

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but it seems that the oral iron supplements are not well tolerated by your gastric system and it seems to be causing you gastric upset or gastritis .. Since food interfere with iron absorption , then I would recommend that you take iron supplements with orange juice or lemonade to decrease its irritating effect on your gastric mucosa . You can also add dimethicone ( dysflatyl ) to your anti-reflux medications to reduce the belching ..
If your symptoms persist, then you can take only one tablet daily.. If still no improvement then you should refer to your doctor to replace the oral iron supplements with intravenous iron supplements . I hope I answered your question. if you don't have any other clarifications then please close the discussion.
