What Causes Back Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: can pulling a 4x6 wool oriental rug up and putting on the loveseat right in front of it hurt my back? I did it a couple of times in the past and when I did it I didn't feel any pain. I don't know how much it weighs. When I just did it I didn't feel any pain either this time but I am a little older by about 6 months or so.. I got on my knees and pulled it down,

Brief Answer:
Back pain from pulling rug yes.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with you medical question.

You are concerned that your recent moving of an oriental rug may has caused you back pain. The short answer yes. When doing anything requiring lifting or pulling we usually lift/pull by bending over and then standing up from the bent position. This is a good way to strain you back muscles. You may not feel immediate pain but several hours later the muscles may go into spasms and create the pain.

I recommend to help reduce you pain
1. Start moist heat or ice depending on which helps you best. Some people like heat and others cold.
2. Use ibuprofen or Naprosyn and Tylenol for the pain
3. Stretching exercises to reduce spasms
4. Regular light aerobic exercise like walking
5. Massage or physical therapy to work on the muscles affected
6. if these efforts don't help then I recommend seeking medical attention for additional medication and help
