Brief Answer:
different possible causes

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Pain in the ankle can be due to problems with any structure in the area meaning it can be due to: (1) problems in the skin - eg painful rash or area of previous rash eg shingles or bacterial infection of the skin or underlying tissues

(2)related to ligaments or muscles in the area or other soft tissue such as strain or inflammation of one of these areas

(3)related to the underlying bones in the ankle such as arthritis, fracture or infection of the bone (unlikely if no fever)

If there are no obvious infected areas or history of shingles then it is likely due the soft tissues or bones.

If there is not a history of severe trauma then fracture is not likely though arthritis is still a possibility.

In the absence of any evidence of infection or if there is no risk of fracture then you can consider the general measures for bone or soft issue conditions-(1) rest if possible,
(2) elevation and compression if there is any evidence of swelling,
(3)anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, naproxen, cataflam

If the pain continues, then you may need assessment by your doctor to determine the exact cause.
History of pain and associated symptoms, examination and possibly imaging of the ankle would be needed.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
