What Causes Alternating Loose Stool And Constipation After Taking Prevpac?
Question: Hi,
I took prevpac six years ago because i was diagnosed with H Pylori. I only took it for three days because it got me sick. I also experienced a change in my stool and started having digestion problems immediately. My stool shape and size changed and I started having loose stool and constipation at times. My stool is odorless and I have not been normal since I took this medicine. Since, I have taken further antibiotics for other reasons and now my gut is in the worst shape ever. Im really worried because I recently started getting stomach cramping almost everyday and off an on diarrhea/bloating and have some mental fog. Im not feeling well and I don't know what to do. Please advise. Thank you.

Based on the history you have shared, it needs to be evaluated in detail by some basic blood work up to start with including liver functions, serum electrolytes and kidney functions to assess for any electrolyte and water loss causing the lethargy and other symptoms as in that condition it may need urgent intravenous fluids or oral rehydration salts and water replacement.
For the primary symptoms I would suggest you to have detailed gastroentrologist review and may need stool analysis, microscopy, cultures and serology for clostridium Difficile.
Meanwhile using metronidazole may ne an option on preliminary basis alongwith probiotics and anti spasmodic like drotaverine can be used for symptomatic relief. If symptoms persist it may need lower and upper GI endoscopy or colonoscopy.
