What Causes Abdominal Cramps During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Apr 2014
Question: Hi. I have recently found out I am expecting! My last period started on February 25th of this year. April 2nd I had the blood test come back positive from my ob/gyn. I am slightly worried about something. I have been having some light period-like cramps lately in the middle of my uterus, which from what I have researched, are normal. But today, I am experiencing some left side lower abdominal pains. They almost feel like ovulation pains but a little stronger. They didn't last very long, maybe 10 seconds. I am scared about the idea of an ectopic pregnancy. Any advice or help would be so greatly appreciated!

Brief Answer: Detailed explanation provided below. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome to health care magic, I completely understand your concern. There are a few possible explanations for this: 1. These are normal mild cramps that may be experienced by many women during pregnancy. 2. It is a threatened abortion. Meaning that there is some reason that the uterus is trying to expel the baby out. 3. It may be an ectopic. 4. pain from ovarian cysts 5. Other possibilities are ureteric stones, colonic cramps and so on. If you had regular periods then you are 5 weeks 5 days. Ectopics do produce symptoms at similar gestation but they are not the commonest cause of pain in abdomen during pregnancy. Threatened abortions, colitis, and stones are more common. Despite that it is better to get an examination and ultrasound and if required a serum beta HCG test if there is pain. Also from your history it seems that the pain has not stopped after a single episode and is recurring. Please do not worry as other causes are more common and hence more likely. But ruling out an ectopic as well as a threatened abortion and twisted ovarian cyst are important and urgent. An ultrasound is mandatory in every pregnant woman complaining of abdominal pain. I suggest that you either visit your gynecologist urgently if possible or if this is not possible go to the ER and get evaluated. Even if it is not an ectopic, it may be a threatened abortion or any of the above conditions and you will be benefited by treatment. Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM.
