What Causes Abdominal Bloating?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Oct 2014
Question: I had the mirena coil fitted in 2012. Ive since had 2 pulmonary embolisms so im on Warfarin for life and waiting to see a haematologist.....Hughes Syndrome?
Anyway, for the past few months a piled on loads of weight and my stomach is so bloated that it looks like im 8 months pregnant. Im also constantly exhausted. My GP has booked me in for a pelvic scan. I went to see a lady doctor today just for a routine look at my cervix. She couldn't find the threads for the coil and said its disappeared. I don't know when the coil disappeared as I don't check the threads. Could this be the cause of my bloated stomach/exhaustion and where can the coil be? Im so fed up.

Brief Answer:
Pelvic ultrasound will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The coil remains inside the uterus and rarely perforates the uterus. The missing threads can be due to breaking off of the thread or a pregnancy. You can get an ultrasound scan done to find out the location of the coil and since the threads are missing it is best to get it removed.
The feeling of bloating is likely to be due to gas and indigestion and is not related to the missing threads of the coil.

Thank you for your reply. I know that the bloatedness is not gas or indigestion as my feet, ankles and fingers have all swelled up aswell. GP gave me water tablets but they haven't done a thing. Do you think it could be an ovarian cyst then? Could it also be a blood disorder i.e. hughes syndrome as im due to see a haematologist to see why I keep getting PE's.?

Brief Answer:
Needs investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Ovarian cyst can cause the swelling but it will not cause the missing threads. Blood disorder and other causes of generalized swelling need to be ruled out after proper investigations under the guidance of your physician.
Hope my answer is helpful.
