What Causes A Swollen Spot On The Palate Of The Mouth Of A Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jun 2016
Question: My son has a swollen spot on the roof of his mouth, right behind his front teeth. I have been to 3 Drs., and no one seems to have a clue what is wrong. it is very symmetrical. He is 2 years old and has no other symptoms. It appears to be just fluid in there but no one wants to relieve it because they have never seen it. I do have pictures and x-rays electronically available.....He has been attached to his pacifier and bottle since birth. But won't take either anymore because he says it hurts him.

Attached are some photos and an x-ray

No Fever, no redness anywhere else. One doctor thought it may be a swollen gland, but since she had never seen it and it didn't show up in the x-ray didn't believe that was what it is. They are all stumped. One gave a Rx for antibiotic and the last one said to hold off until a maxillofacial surgeon looked at it. no word back yet.

Brief Answer:
Might be a retention cyst or Epulis or soft tissue Overgrowth..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain, explanation of the symptoms and the images attached the lump looks like either a soft tissue Overgrowth as the x ray does not reveal any bony erosion due to the lump..
It can be an Adenoma formed due to inflammation of the minor salivary glands..
If you feel that it is filled with fluid it can be a retention cyst or a MUCOCELE formed due to ruptured duct of minor salivary gland leading to accumulation of mucous into soft tissues..

The exact diagnosis needs a proper clinical examination with palpation of the lump along with investigations like Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology or Biopsy of the lump..
For this consult a Maxillofacial Surgeon and get evaluated..
Once the lesion is tested and a confirmatory diagnosis is made treatment can be done accordingly..

As of now you can apply a numbing gel containing Lignocaine over it if it is painful and caused discomfort while sucking Pacifier or bottle nipple..
You can also give Tylenol for pain..

Any further questions are welcome.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
