default
Posted on Tue, 13 Sep 2016
Question: My son has a swollen area in his neck behind his ear. He woke up one morning crying saying his neck hurt and couldn't move it. I thought maybe he slept in a bad position. But the pain persisted. The actual swelling didn't show up until a couple of days later. He has no other symptoms.

Brief Answer:
As explained

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history about your 8 year old son.
Noted the history of waking up one morning crying, saying his neck hurt and could not move the neck - pain persisted and swelling showed up a couple of days later - no other symptoms...
The commonest causes of such a appearance are:
- Swelling of the muscle particularly the sternocleidomastoid.
- Lymph node swelling.

This can be confirmed by High resolution Ultrasonography and FNAC if needed.
Continue Ibuprofen, but also consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, examination, investigations and reference for a Specialist's opinion and further management.
Please continue the treatment till complete resolution.

I hope this answer helps you for an early and proper diagnosis and management.
