What Causes A Small Lump At The Site Of Bartholin Abscess Drainage?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jun 2016
Question: I had a Bartholin's Abcess many yrs ago on the left side. The ER doc did an I and D - and placed a word catheter which fell out after a few days. All went well. The past 3-4 weeks - have a plum size lump - firm, not painful, in the same area. Not getting larger, not going away. No fever, no abnormal vag discharge. Can't see my family doctor until 3 weeks time. What to do?

Brief Answer:
seems like a cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

This time, the features suggest a cyst. Cyst means fluid collection which is not infected. Absence of pain and firmness, no raised temperature, suggest that there is no abscess or infection.

If you can't see a doc immediately, you can follow it yourself. If it increases in size, becomes painful, there is pus discharge, temperature rises locally, or fever, you should go to ER.

Hope this helps.

Thank you - the lump is fairly firm and is moveable to a point.Does this additional information suggest anything different?

Brief Answer:
not much

Detailed Answer:
Mobility suggests benign lump. And if fluid collection is tense, it can also feel as firm.

So still think it is benign.

One last question for you - if the lump does not become infected - does not become bothersome and I have no fever and feel well - it is possible the fluid will gradually reabsorb? I'm a patient person as well as an ER nurse - and really have no desire to have a doctor I know do an I&D on it if I really don't have to. Been there - done that. Still have an appt with my family doctor on the 27th of this month and will bring it to her attention. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
may not absorb fully

Detailed Answer:
It may reduce a bit but not likely to subside fully.

If it is not bothersome, then can just be observed.
