What Causes A Positive THC Urine Test?

default
Posted on Thu, 10 Mar 2016
Question: My daughter who is 21 years old is under court ordered drug testing through urine testing. She has been tested for over 2 months twice a week. He test results show a range of between 190 and the lowest at 150, but she swears she has not been smoking, but her husband is a heavy smoker. Can THC show up in urine testing though sexual contact or swallowing semen? And if it does could it show reading as high as 190 to 150? Desperate Dad.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, the only way for marijuana to be positive on a urine test is for the person to have done marijuana. You cannot have a positive test any other way than smoking it yourself. Neither secondhand smoke nor any other way you mention like sexual contact can cause a positive test.
If you have any further doubt/ clarification please feel free to ask.

- Thank you, but are there any scientific data showing that THC is found in semen? If so, at what amounts? Will eating marijuana products like brownies show high levels of THC in Urine Testing?

THC is not found in semen or transmitted this way. Eating marijuana edibles like brownies have very high levels of THC and do show up in urine.

Thank you again Dr. Sheppe, but I have one more follow up question. What is the testing range for current positive marijuana usage. If my daughter is a heavy smoker and stopped using what would her testing range show over a 3 month period of time? Is there a way we will know that she has stopped using by viewing the twice a week test?

Detailed Answer:
Marijuana can stay in the system of heavy users for up to 3 months. If she showed any negatives since stopping that have since become positive, it is because she is smoking again. If the test is negative, that's the only way you will know she has stopped.

Dr. Sheppe responded to me quickly, and his answers seemed to be very knowledgeable, but I asked id there was any scientific data, he did not site, quote or reference any data or studies.

Detailed Answer:
There are no studies regarding THC and semen. This is commonsense medical knowledge. It is impossible for semen ingestion to result in a positive urine drug screen.
