What Causes A Mild Headache And Tenderness After A Head Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: I hit my head very hard on the top of my head on a bathroom cabinet yesterday. It hurt so bad that I had trouble catching my breathe. After I calm down, my head was very sore and started to hurt. I immediately applied an ice bag to the top of my head and took 1 extra strength Excedrin which helped. Today, the next day, I was seemed to be fine this morning; but now this afternoon I have a terrible headache, the top of my head is very sore, and I seem a tad dizzy, but not bad, could be just the bad headache. Should I just take a couple more Tylenol and put a cold compress on my head and rest for awhile or should I go to the ER? Except for the sore spot on my head and the terrible headache, I'm not experiencing any weakness in my extremities or nausea. I've heard so much about brain swelling that I'm worried, should I be. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic,

I read carefully your query.

It is normal to have a mild headache after hitting the head and the area of injury to be tender to touch.Usually this headache is totally controlled with a Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.
If the headache is very strong ,is not controlled by Paracetamol , and it keeps getting worse ,you need to go to ER.They will do a CAT scan to see if there is any injury and bleeding in your brain.
If you experience any other symptoms like feeling very drowsy and sleepy ,having nausea or any other symptom ,go to ER right away.

If the headache is mild and you don't have any other symptom at all than you don't need to worry.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any question or need any clarification.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
