What causes a lump on the palatoglossal arch?

Posted on Fri, 14 Jul 2017 in Ear, Nose and Throat Problems
Question: I have a lump on my palatoglossal arch for 3 days. It is almost 1 cm diameter. It appeared suddenly. It appears lobulated like three little balls forming a bigger ball. I do not have tonsils. I know it was not there before because I check my mouth all the time since I have also oral lichen planus a mild form for several years and I get some small lesions from time to time. It was not painful for two days , now the third day it kind of bother me and my throat is a little sore.
I started to be worried.

Hi,thank you for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.
The image which you have uploaded is not much clear. It looks like a cyst over the anterior pillar in the throat.
I would request you to upload a better image,to have a better idea about the swelling.

Take care.

I uploaded a new image. Hope is better.
Could a cyst in that area resolve by itself? Could it be malignant?

Brief Answer:
It looks like a cyst over the Anterior pillar region of Mouth

Detailed Answer:
Hi,I have gone through the resized image ,which you have uploaded later.
From the image,it looks like a cyst over the Anterior pillar region.
It might be a lymphoepithelial cyst.

It would be advisable to consult an ENT specialist doctor.He/She will get a better idea about the swelling by palpating the swelling.
If it feels cystic ,then mostly it would be a cyst.
Another information which needs ,is that whether the cyst is only over the anterior pillar region or still spread inside. If it feels, that the swelling is extended inside, then a CT scan might be needed to find out the exact location and extent of swelling and its content.

It does not looks to be malignant. If it is malignant, then it would probably have a rough surface, hard in consistency, bleeding from the surface, etc.

If the cyst is just over the anterior pillar, then if there are no symptoms, then you may wait for a few days,it might resolve. But if it does not resolves, then an excision biopsy of the cyst might be needed.

Hops this answers your question.Take care.
