What Causes A Lump On The Knee After A Fall?

default
Posted on Sat, 21 Jan 2017
Question: I fell on some ice a short while ago and my knee is very painful and there is a big lump on the center of my knee. I have been icing it for a short while and I've taken some Alleve. However, it hurts if I try to lay down or sit down, whether my leg is bent or straight. It is tolerable when I am standing. I plan to continue icing it, but I wondered if there is anything I should be aware of that would indicate I should be seen by a doctor. I just moved to a new state a few weeks ago and don't have a doctor established yet.

Brief Answer:
It seems that you did not get any serious damage just soft tissue.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic, I am Dr Muhammd Ahmad, I have closely read your question and I understand your concerns, I will hereby guide you regarding your health related problem.

According to your description you do not seem to have any fracture. Our biggest concern after a trauma is a fracture but as you can stand well and your knee is supporting you well so there does not seem to be any fracture of your weight bearing bones at the least.

Now only one concern remains and that is a knee cap fracture, you can gently palpate your knee cap and feel it's integrity plus by touching you can also feel if it pains more than other parts who got trauma, if there is a fracture of knee cap there would be excessive swelling, pain and deformed surface on the knee cap exclusively. If there is nothing out of the ordinary then most probably knee cap is safe.

Icing is the best thing that can be done, a pain killer like Tylenol and Ibuprofen would help reducing pain and inflammation. When you are not icing wrap a crepe bandage around it to keep it stable, less XXXXXXX and it will also prevent swelling.

Do not sit hanging your leg/cross legged or stand for a long time, take ample rest, standing for long and hanging your leg can make edema travel to ankles and feet too.

This will take 4-5 days to get better. If you want to visit a doctor do not worry this does not need a specialist to check for any damage, any emergency facility would be enough.

I hope this answered your question, if you have more feel free to ask, otherwise kindly close the discussion and rate it.

Regards.
