What Causes A Knot On Shin After An Injury?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Sep 2014
Question: I spoke with one of you collegues several days ago about large bruising on my leg. I stumbled and hit my left shin, just about right in the front, middle of the bone. it is still bruised which i was told will take 2-3 weeks to fade away. The doctor spoke of a soft tissue injury. My leg swells by the end of the day, and is itchy. Also, there is an enlarged 'knot' on my shin, below where i wacked it, just a bit above the ankle, front/center of my leg. i haven't had any problems walking, but the lump/knot isn't at the site of the original whack and scrape, but several inches (5/6 inches) below that. Is the 'knot' just from the soft tissue damage? Anything i should do to relieve it? I elevate my leg when possible, such as after work.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Can you please attach a photo of it so I can give more precise answer?
Such knot can be caused by superficial veins thrombosis. Please note that injury is one of the thrombosis factor. Blood collection in the soft tissues can be also the reason of such symptom. Both issues can give leg swelling due to impeded blood flow through the veins. So it is possible that you did more than just soft tissues injury. Some hematomas needs to be drained with an incision. Superficial veins thrombosis should be treated with heparin injections and compression stockings. You should consult general surgeon with this problem.

Thats the best answer I can give not being able to see it.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
