What Causes A Cyst On The Gums With Tooth Pain?
Question: I am 47 and clench my teeth but have a mouthguard
I had gold crown put in on a back molar number 46 in 2005.
It had many fillings.
This year, it was assumed due to excessive clenching in May - acute pain resulted
in that tooth which subsided a few weeks later. Back In September, the tooth was achy again and the crown was shortened in elevation and pain subsided again.
Two weeks ago, I had a sudden cyst on the gumline beside the tooth.
Dentist took an xray and stated the tooth was infected/inflamed and recommended a root canal. He drilled through the gold crown and was unable to do the root canals as the upper part of the canals had calcified. He inferred that an endodontist with a microscope could still complete the work successfully.
The cyst has disappeared and I have a temporary filling.
I see an endodontist on Tuesday for a root canal.
The tooth feels overall well, I still have a bit of pressure discomfort but this could be still be from clenching
1. What determines whether I should really have a root canal
2. Is the tooth technically dead now as the canal wasn't really done yet
3. What are complications of doing a root canal with my situation
4. Isnt it better to leave the tooth alone and repair the gold crown

As per your complain if there is pain in tooth along with formation of a cyst/ lump over the gum beside the tooth then it is an indication of infection in the tooth..
When the infection reaches below the root tips of the tooth there is pus accumulation and formation of a lump..
In that condition an x ray is the best way to rule out if the tooth needs Root Canal Treatment or not..
If the canals are partially calcified then also tooth can get infected and an Endodontist can use certain medication and instrumentation to open the canals and follow proper procedure...
Even in your situation Root Canal Treatment should be completed as the tooth can get flared up again and again till the infection is completely cleaned off and cause pain and lump formation..
As of now do not get the crown repaired and first get a consultation with Endodontist done so that he can effectively do Root Canal Treatment..
After that only get the crown repaired..

could flare up again - 10, 50, 90 percent?
2. What do you base this upon question 1
3. If the tooth doesn't get re-infected -isn't it a healthlier tooth or a living one
vs a mummified one if the root canal is done?
4. What is the likihoood an experienced endo can do the work with calcification
