What Caues Popping Sound In Jaw While Opening Mouth?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: I have a horrible popping noise in my jaw when I open my mouth. Chewing is almost embarrassing I'm not sure how it sounds to people around me but to me it's bad! I went to a dentist she told me to take ibuprofen every 6 hours and lay a warm cloth on my face every day. It doesn't do anything. At this point when I yawn a sharp pain goes up The back of my neck not sure if it's related.

This popping started a few years ago I don't think I injured it on my own the only thing I did do was have a back tooth pulled around that time. As far as I know no medical problems such as blood pressure etc but I haven't been checked out. I do see black spots in my vision All Day every day when I look at bright things. And the dentist didn't take any x-rays at all all she did was feel my jaw with her hand

Brief Answer:
may be inflammation and need evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for reply.

Please note that mostly you have developed mild to moderate inflammation with your temporomandibular joint. It could be age related, due to stress or infection.

Therefore, it requires to be examined thoroughly, as the joint cavity is very delicate in nature.

Any surgical intervention or medication is not recommended without proper evaluation and investigation(x ray and MRI).Therefore please meet an oral and maxillofacial(OMFS) surgeon( a dentist who deals exclusively with TMJ joints) and get the TMJ(temporo mandibular joints) examined clinically.

After which he might give you a course of muscle relaxants and antibiotics. You might also require an appliance to wear and give rest to your concerned joint.
Therefore please visit an OMFS and get it examined.

You can take your pain killers as and when required, every eight hourly.
but try to meet the dentist as early as possible.
Hope it helps.

Let me know for further doubts.
Thanks.
Take care.
