default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: My daughter is of 2.7 yrs and she is prone to cough and cold which invariably is every month and takes 5 days to get well, the doctor prescribes Kidpred, Asthalin and Switch-100 syrups and SOS we do nebulise her with Asthalin. Doctor has said she is a case of BRONCHIAL ASTHMA, but just recurring cough with climate change. My request is please confirm:-
(a) The medicine which are prescribed are right one or not.?
(b) Earlier we use to give her inhalers(Asthalin and Budecort) when she was 8 months old but stop these inhalers after 1 yr. For past 11 months she is fine without these inhalers but recently after weather changes she again devolops the above mention symptoms.
Should we continue with these inhalers (Y/ N) and how long we continue?
(c) Any Preventive medicine available for cold and cough.
(d) Should we give any supplement to her to improve her immunity.

Detailed Answer:
HI...I will be glad to answer all your queries one by one, once I have the right information about your daughter with me.

By what you quote I feel what your kid could be having viral associated wheeze or multi triggered wheeze. a kid less than 5 years cannot be labeled as Bronchial asthma as they might grow out of it. I have a few questions for you -

Questions:
1. How many days per month does she cough or feel breathless?
2. How many nights per month does her sleep get disturbed due to above symptoms?
3. Does she feel breathless when she runs around or plays with other kids?
4. Are the symptoms when there are seasonal changes?
5. Is there any family history of asthma or any other sort of allergies like skin allergy etc.?
6. Is the cough always associated with fever?
7. Are you using a spacer when you use the inhaler medication?
8. If at any point of time a Chest X-ray has been taken, can you upload the image of the Chest X-ray?

No point in using antibiotics (SWICH) every time. It will do more harm than good by increasing bacterial resistance.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. Wish your kid good health.
