What Casues Leaky Gut Syndrome When Suffering From Hypothyroidism?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Jun 2014
Question: I went to see my Cardiologist/Internist today, because I thought I seem to be having difficulty getting my Thyroid meds under control( I have Hashimoto's Diseas,) and I wanted to rule out any heart problems that might be related. In the meantime, he suspects I may have Leaky Gut Syndrome, when I explained all the symptoms I'm having. These include, bloating, and water weight gain. He is doing blood work, and a saliva test. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do in the meantime, until I see him again, in about 4 weeks, to help with Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Brief Answer:
There is no harm in waiting!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this weight gain and bloating that you have reported as well as the suspicion of the leaky gut syndrome.

From the symptoms that you have reported, this could be well explained by an under treated thyroid disorder. Bloating and weight gain are common findings in patients with hypothyroidism. I will like to see your doctor look at your TSH levels and review your symptoms fully to see if this is the case.

Leaky gut syndrome is a loosely used term. In itself it is not a disease but in most cases caused by other disease conditions. There are a few known causes of this condition but several of them remained unidentified. There is no rush with treating this condition as what matters most is first identifying what a possible cause for this leaky gut could be before proposing any treatment options.

It is unlikely for a heart condition to cause bloating and water weight gain without first reporting symptoms of short of breath and difficulties doing physical exercises. Let me know if you are having any of these symptoms. Also, have you had any heart diseases in the past?

In the meantime, do not get too worried. Do the tests as requested and follow up with him. Nothing bad or a complication would result fro this condition within 4weeks. I am very suspicious that poorly functioning thyroid could be the cause of your bloating and weight gain.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you s much for using our services and please feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

I have been consulting with 2 Endocrinologists on you website, regarding my current treatment, with Armour Thyroid. One agreed I should stay on Armour Thryoid if I feel better on it, as opposed to Synthroid. The Cardiologist said he will be testing my blood to see if I'm on the correct dose of Thyroid Hormone. The reason the Cardiologist suspects Leaky Gut, is because I have been treated with different Thyroid Hormones, and different dosages, but nothing seems to be helping. My symptoms have been getting worse instead of better the last 2 years. I am hoping this doctor can finally help me, and I will complete all of the recommended tests. It is just hard to sit and wait, and do nothing for the next 4 weeks, because as I said, it's been 2 years and I'm running out of patience.

Brief Answer:
I understand your impatience!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for following up.

If you feel better on a drug, that is what matters. We listen to how the patient feels and not the name of drugs. Which ever works for you and proves safe, please stick to it.

I understand it would have been best to have something going for you. However, what matters is doing the right thing than rushing to do just what is not right. I will side with your doctor to wait and act on the results rather than making hasty decisions that may not prove helpful.

I understand it has been a long way coming. I know how we all feel when we are looking for solutions to feel better. It is normal to feel this way. However, please exercise some more patience and hope that we come up something concrete to act on.

Please, exercise some more patience. Please....
