What Casues Deformity In Sternum?

Question: A pulmonologist just told me that my CT Scan showed that the lower 2/3 of my sternum ends mid thorax...how could this be when I have never had any CT scan or MRIs in last 10 years ever note such a finding?! I am 58 F very active in horseback riding and swimming.
