Question: Hi, my name is XXXX and I am diagnosed with bipolar since 1996, I have been through the gambit of meds and only one seems to really help - lithim. Well my psychiatrist tells me that my BUN and creatinine are starting to show signs of kidney distress. I don’t have access to a kidney doc so I cholamicatal again which soes Nothing for me. And ideas? Depacote makes me sick. Lithium is the only thing that controls my symptoms and helps me feel better.... please can you help me?!?!

Hello thanks for asking

I can understand your problem. If your renal function tests are showing renal impairment then in that case you should avoid Lithium totally.

Lithium can prove harmful to kidneys and renal impairment can worsen lithium toxicity.

You can keep other mood stabilisers as options. You didn’t find relief with Depakote or Valproate then other mood stabilisers like Carbamazepine or Lamotrigine can be tried. Even low dose second generation antipsychotic drugs like Olanzapine or Risperidone can be used. Olanzapine is safe to use and will provide good mood stabilisation.

You can talk with your doctor for this.
