Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Burning mouth syndrome is defined as a burning sensation in the mouth for which no medical or dental cause can be found.
To be classified as having this condition your doctors would have done tests to rule out other possible causes of this sensation. (at present though because it is not totally understood there are no specific blood, imaging tests suggested)

If a specific problem had been identified then treatment would have been directed towards that specific condition.

At present there is no specific cure for this condition and medications that have been suggested have varied success.
Combination treatment may be appropriate.

The most common combination is medication along with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
CBT allows a person to alter their thoughts and behaviour as it relates to a particular issue or condition so that it becomes easier to deal with it.

In terms of medication, the following can be used- amitriptyline,

(2)the SSRI anti depressants (they used for conditions other than depression such as chronic pain). Examples are zoloft, prozac

(3)clonazepam

(4)oral lidnocaine

(5)capsaicin- oral

(6)anti seizure medication such as topamax- again this family of drugs, like the antidepressants are very helpful with chronic or nerve related pain

(7) using supplements with vitamin b, folate, zinc

Neuropathy refers to abnormal sensation related to the nerves. It can be related to diabetes, stroke, infections, autoimmune diseases, side effect of medication among other causes.

It is treated by addressing the particular disease. In addition some of the medication mentioned above is used for neuropathy particularly amitriptyline, the SSRI antidepressants and anti seizure medication (tegretol, lyrica, gabapentin, topamax).

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any additional questions
