Question: In case of pleural effusion, caused by viral or bacterial infection {not cancer): What are the mechanics of the fluid production? Where does the fluid come from, what produces it? If the pathogen is eliminated, will the fluid production also stop? what role do the kidneys play?

Viral or bacterial infection involving the pleural surface causes inflammation. The capillaries become leaky and fluid oozes out into the tissue spaces and from there into the pleural cavity.
If the pathogen is controlled, then inflammation subsides and capillary leak is reduced. Gradually the fluid is reabsorbed via blood vessels and lymph vessels.
Kidneys don't play any significant role. After the fluid is reabsorbed in vessels it is mixed with intravascular fluid pool and goes through kidneys. Any excess fluid is removed but this is true for any excess fluid.
