What Are The Symptoms Of Concussion Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Mar 2015
Question: I have been to the ER and diagnosed with a concussion but did not get much information on what to do or not do. I'm still very dizzy, disoriented at imes and finding it difficult to find the words needed to complete a sentence or connect my thoughts and verbalize them. I've had it for a week and am better than I was but not sure what to do or not do. I found driving a bit much and my ususal routine also difficult, not sure how long I should curtail activity- my family thinks I should be ok to do everything yet I know I'm not feeling normal yet.

Brief Answer:
Allow yourself adequate mental rest and avoid heavy physical activity

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
However, a person who suffers concussion injury might report many of the symptoms which are frequently come across in patients having such an injury. This kind of injury considered a mild form of brain injury. As CT scan is normal, there is no concern for serious head injury.

People having a concussion might experience headaches, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, loss of concentration and memory and cognitive functions, and noise sensitivity most commonly. These usually get better in 3 months.

Less common symptoms include ringing in the ears, hearing loss, blurred vision, light and noise sensitivity, decreased smell and taste, depression, personality change, post-traumatic stress disorder, and nausea and sometimes vomiting.

In conclusion, I would like to assure you that these symptoms will disappear over the next few weeks. Please do mind relaxation exercises and take frequent breaks from work. Avoid heavy physical activity and give adequate rest to your mind also. You should be doing better over the next 2 to 4 weeks with complete recovery in about 2 to 3 months.

Wishing you quick recovery.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
