What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Herpes?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: conflicting info. about testing for HSV 2 - Dr. said tests were unreliable/unnecessary - if I knew I have HSV. I suspect I do. My late husband acquired it from his ex-wife unknowingly, I choose to have unprotected sex with him after six years of marriage - first outbreak occured when he was diagnosed with non-Hogkins Lymphoma...stress related. My question is: I am in love with a man who most likely has been exposed and he is having a hard time getting medical practitioners to test him for HSV (IgG Type Specific) as no one seems to know much about herpes. His Dr. told him he had it w/o doing a lesion swab or bw d/t his presenting symptoms last year. We want to rule in or rule out my chances of giving him Herpes and to be proactive in our sexual health...seems to be difficult to get traction with this with med. practitioners.

Brief Answer:
Regarding testing for herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist and venereologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.
In the absence of a clinical episode of genital herpes, a type specific IgG HSV ELISA (HerpeSelect) is a sensitive and specific screening blood test to confirm or rule out past herpes infection as this test would remain positive throughout life. Therefore both of you can take HSV type specific IgG screening test (HerpeSelect) to confirm or rule out previous exposures.
