Question: My liver enzymes have been elevated for the past 4-5 years. My AST/ALT ranges from 38/40 to 68/70.. My phosphate is normal and bilirubin. What does this mean? My cholesterol is 268, I weight 184lb and Im 5'2". I have a history of fatty liver. But i know lots of people with fatty liver and it doesnt affect their enzymes.. What should i look out for and could this be cancer symptom? My enzymes have been fluctuating these past years up and down.. Concerned

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about elevated liver enzymes over the past 4-5 years. These number show that you may have fatty liver. Because your are overweight and have high cholesterol your liver is being deposited with high amounts of fat. this extra fat in the liver is squeezing the normal liver cells. This extra squeeze is causing the elevated AST and ALT. If you can lose weight and lower your cholesterol you can reverse this damage. If this continues this may eventually lead to permanent liver damage. So I would really encourage you to make some changes to reduce your cholesterol and weight

There is no worry about liver cancer.
