Posted on Tue, 5 Sep 2017
Question: My dad is close to 80 years old and shows signs of Alzheimer's. He, at times, after a afternoon nap, forgets what time of the day it is, forgets where he is and all. But he is also very sleepy throughout the day and we thought it was his meds as that is one of the side-effects. but we switched the time he takes it and is still sleepy throughout the day. should we be concerned? Alzheimer's runs n his side of the family.

Brief Answer:
Alzheimer's includes additional symptoms besides memory issues.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Just episodes of forgetting doesn't mean necessarily that your father is suffering from Alzheimer's.

Besides memory issues, mild Alzheimer's symptoms include confusion about familial places, trouble accomplishing normal daily tasks, compromised judgment, anxiety, mood changes, loss of initiative, etc.

So, if you notice these additional symptoms besides memory issues, you should get your father to his Neurologist to be evaluated about possible dementia.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.
