Ibuprofen and other drugs of the class NSAIDS "Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory"; ie, Asprin, Naproxen, rarely effect the liver to any significant degree. The medication Acetaminophen however, has a direct liver effect, and therefore its use (for pain/it does not treat inflammation) is limited to a 4000mg a day daily limit, with strict monitoring and suggested non-chronic usage.

With Chronic or long term Ibuprofen use there is a potential for the medication to disturb the balance of acidity in the stomach and intestines, weakening the protective lining of this system, leaving you with possible irritation of the stomach lining (known as gastritis), ulcers, flatulence, gas, bloating, and or other GI disturbances. Another side effect of NSAID/Ibuprofen use (Depending on the Dosage and length taken) is possible Kidney damage due to effects of altered blood flow, therefore if you are taking high dosages, I highly suggest you speak to your doctor on routine blood testing to ensure proper kidney function. The usual dose of over the counter Ibuprofen is 200mg per tablet. The maximum amount of ibuprofen for adults is 800 milligrams per dose or 3200 mg per day.

As long as you are not taking amounts greater than this, I suggest you monitor your GI system for any abnormal symptoms (pain, blood per stool or vomiting, dark black stools), and speak to your doctor about recommended blood testing for kidney function. If you do experience uncomfortable side effects I would recommend you stop the medications and speak to your physician. Until then, based upon your dosages, I would assume that you can be reasonably side effect free, without destruction to your liver, kidneys or vital functions.
