What Are The Side Effects Of Continued Intake Of Minioxidil And Androgena?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: I consulted a very reputed doctor in XXXXXXX She informed me about Finasteride and side effects (i know the probability of side effects is less, but I chose not to take it).

She suggested Mintop Forte 5%, FolliHair ( multivitamin) and instead of Finasteride she suggested Androgena.

Wanted to know the probable side effects of continued Minioxidil use and Androgena.

Brief Answer:
Minoxidil can cause dryness, headache;would like to know ingredients in tab

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have understood your concern

Minoxidil can cause dryness of scalp since it is formulated in an alcohol base. Rarely it can cause irritation.
Using larger quantity than what is recommended (recommended is 1 ml twice daily) can cause a dull headache.
Apart from these rare instances of side effects minoxidil is absolutely safe and can be used long term.

I am not sure about the active ingredients present in Androgena tablet. Probably you can tell me its active ingredients. I guess it would be containing saw palmetto extract as the main active ingredient.
Saw palmetto extract is an alternative to finasteride for treatment for androgenetic alopecia. It has the same mechanism of action as Finasteride however it is claimed to be free of sexual side effects seen with finasteride like loss of libido.
Saw palmetto extract is not yet US FDA approved for androgenetic alopecia.

Both finasteride and saw palmetto extract are antiandrogens and there is a slight risk of gynecomastia (i.e breast enlargement in males) in those who take them for longer duration i.e months Or years, as is usually prescrined in androgenetic alopecia. Though, in clinical practice not many patients notice or complain of gynaecomastia. Nevertheless one should be aware of this side effect.
