What Are The Side Effects Of A Depo-Provera Shot?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: I was given the depo provera shot back in December per the advise of my doctor and every since then I have had some strange symptoms.

I read up on some of the side effects like: spotting, hot flashes, tiredness, weakness, depression, irritability, to name a few. I have felt weak at times and now, after a month of it being in my system, all I want to do is sleep. My appetite has not be affected and I have not gained any weight because I have also been on amoxicillin to treat a sinus infection, which gave me diaherra. Now I have to eat more to gain my weight back.

I have experienced several if not all of these side effects. A couple of weeks after the shot my eyes were very dark and I experienced a bad sinus infection that is still unresolved.

My concern though is the side effects of the shot. I have not been on any type of birth control since I was in my early 20s and this has proven to be consistent with my past experience wuth birth control - horrible. Last year I was given Lupron to remedy pains of endometriosis and fibroids. I did not like the way it made me feel with the hot flashes and the irritability so I chose per the advise of my doctor the depo alternative. I'm not sure what to do now. What other methods of pain relief could I go with?

Brief Answer:
Lupron along with protesting pills.

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am,
Thanks for trusting hcm about your health care.
I have gone through your history and understand your concerns.
In your case in my opinion you should go for Lupron injection along with small amount of progesterone pill to reduce its side effects.
For pain we are usually given pain killer.
Other options are combined oral contraceptive pills.
Could you please upload your reports?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Good luck.

Thank you. Are the side effects I described typical of the depo shot - weakness, tiredness, nervous/antsy feeling?

I have not felt normal since I began taking it and it scares me into thinking it may be something else going on with me.

Brief Answer:
May occur due to depot injection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Sorry for such a long delay in my response.
These symptoms may occur as a side effect of depot injection but usually not a regular side effects of depot injection.
Usually in some patients excessive bleeding occurs after depot shot and these symptoms occur due to that.

Sorry once again for this much delay.
Good luck.

Ok thank you. I have been suffering with sinusitis as well during this first month of having the injection. I was given an antibiotic for that. Do you think these side effects may be due to the sinusitis instead?

Brief Answer:
Could be due to side effects of antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
These symptoms could be due to side effects of antibiotics and a part of sinusitis.Because on antibiotics treatment weakness is a very common symptom.
So most likely your symptoms could be a part of your sinusitis problem and not related with depot shot.
Hope found useful.
Good luck.
