Question: Sir, I am 35 years old and I am suffering from severe headache since 2008, which has been diagnosed as migraine by the neurologist. Neurologist has advised me to take Topaz 50 and Mibeta SR 40 in morning and night one tablet each and PexepCR 12.5, Migranex 5 and Amitop 10 one tablet per day for 06 months. Whether I have to go with these medicines for my headache and what are their side effects?

Brief Answer:
Migraine treatment and drug side effects

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Topaz ( Topiramate) is a new generation anti epileptic and may be prescribed for migraine prevention. Selected side effects-Paresthesias, Cognitive symptoms, Weight loss, Glaucoma; caution with nephrolithiasis.

Mibeta SR (40 mg)- Propranolol- a beta blocker is also commonly prescribed drug for migraine prophylaxis. Selected side effects-Reduced energy, tiredness, postural symptoms; contraindicated in asthma.

Pexep CR 12.5 mg (Paroxetine) is a controlled-release version of Paroxetine, a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) which is neither recommended for migraine nor for Tension-Type Headache, as not shown to be effective. Common side effects-weakness, drowsiness, sleep problems (insomnia);loss of appetite, constipation, decreased sex drive.

Migranex 5mg (Flunarizine)-side effects:Drowsiness, Weight gain, Depression, Parkinsonism.
Amitop 10mg (Amitriptyline) side effect- drowsiness
These two are also drugs for migraine prophylaxis.

Whether you should continue or discard some of these drugs depend on your relief of symptoms or adverse effect of drugs and is best left to treating neurologist.
