Posted on Tue, 18 Oct 2016
Question: Hi Doctor, My son who is 9 years old is using Formanide 200 one puff a day and Montair 10mg 1/2 tablet daily for the last 5 years due to asthma. Just want to check if there is a side effect with these medicines? He often complaints about stomach ache and some times pain in urine passage.
Is there any alternative that we can use instead above medicines to avoid these side effects?

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely due to his medicines

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

if your son is taking these medicines on a long term basis, it shows that he has chronic persistent asthma. Have you ever tried to wean him off these medicines? You should try that.

Formonide has a steroid and a long acting beta agonist. Though inhaler medicines have negligible side effects but at times continuous use of long term steroid may affect his growth and lead to weight gain. His other side effects seem unlikely due to steroid or montair but I will suggest that you get him checked by his paediatrician.

Other alternatives are only avoiding allergens like dust, smoke, junk breathing exercises .

If he has chronic persistent asthma you may try anti IgE therapy for which you have to consult a pulmonologist.

Thanks Doctor for the response. Could you please elaborate about 'junk breathing exercises'? I can't understand it properly.

Brief Answer:
I meant avoiding junk food and deep breathing exercises.

Detailed Answer:
oh I'm sorry. I meant avoiding junk food and doing deep breathing exercises.

By junk food I meant avoiding cold drinks, wafers, pizza, burger etc and oily, spicy food.

Deep breathing exercises like breathing in from one nostril and breathing out from another alternately also help.
